Program
The Program Plan was part of the work completed for the National Bid in 2009.
As the bid moves forward, the program plan will evolve as it
continues to be shaped by the Edmonton Arts Council, festival
organizers, the arts community, the entertainment community, as
well as other Edmontonians.
Pre-EXPO programming:
- 2 symposia between 2011 and 2012
- Events at 24, 12, and 6 months out from EXPO 2017
- International attention for existing and partnered events
- Opportunities to profile various communities
Programming during the EXPO:
- Large-scale opening and closing events
- Regular evening spectacle
- Presentation of music, dance, theatre, literature readings
- Large-scale performances
- Rotating visual art exhibits
- Ambient street entertainment and animation
- Public art incorporated both onsite and offsite
- International days that highlight participating nations and
ethnic groups
- Major events focused on Aboriginal Day, Francophone Day, Canada
Day, and more
Facilities to support the programming:
- Sites for public art
- Gallery for rotating exhibits
- Integration of craft artists for official gifts & high-end
commemoratives
- Large open plaza
- 3 outdoor theatres
- Concert hall
- 6 performance stages
Concurrent educational programming:
- Partnerships with school boards, colleges, and
universities
- A collection of teachers, instructors, students, mentors, and
apprentices
- Involvement of science, technology, language, and arts
curriculum
Partnership Opportunities:
- Local, provincial, and national programming showcased in
pre-EXPO events and in onsite programming
- Shared access to or co-presentation of artists brought in for
EXPO
